Doubling
and Double Approaching Strategies
Double approaching strategy is based on the concept of
avoiding a bogie leave such as 159,162,163,165,166,168 or 169. The
point being that it is better to score 1 or 2 points less to leave a
finish. For example, a 136 score with 306 left will leave you on 170
which is better than scoring 140 to leave 166!

only use bull strategy when opponent is ahead or tied
** only use double approaching strategies when opponent is at 315
or less |
Doubling strategies are based on the qualities of the
doubles. There are three points of interest when considering double
breakdown strategy.
 |
Because we often use triples to arrive at a double,
doubles are broken down into three categories which I will designate
as Group A, Group B and Group C doubles. These are important because
given any number it is only possible to arrive at doubles within one
of these classes by first hitting a triple.
|
 |
The number of times a double breaks down to an even
number when missed on the inside single pie. This is important because
it reduces the number of wasted darts required to make the score even.
|
 |
The larger numbered doubles are in general better
because as you break down to smaller numbers you can bust more often
and ultimately lead to double one which can no longer be broken down.

These groups and relative strategies will be essential in selecting the
best breakdowns. There are however, other important criteria when
considering breakdowns such as darts available and opponent's score. As a
result, the breakdown charts will have several columns for missed shots
and other considerations. I will also break the charts down into
categories. In parenthesis in the headers are calculated percentages for
these strategies based on typical pro level precision.

These can only be done by using double bull. So there is very little
choice here except that one could play T20-T18-DB on 164. It should be
noted that one does not need to play the finish if the opponent is not on
a 3 dart breakdown. Statistically it is better in this situation to setup
a good double for the next shot such as double 16.

This strategy is statistically better for 3 dart outs than the T-T-D
strategy. However, if the opponent is above 120 then it is likely better
to play the T-T-D strategy and play for a 6 dart win. In this case
T20-T17-D12 and T20-T16-D12 is suggested.

Notice 125 is left out as it has the disadvantage of 128 and 129 of no
2nd option, but has another strategy using bull which is weaker than the
122 percentage yet stronger than the 128 percentage.
Also, these bull strategies are only statistically worthwhile if the
opponent is ahead in score. Otherwise, T-T-D strategy pays off. On 122
with 6 darts it is worth while to play bull first - DB-T16-D12/SB-T19-D20.

6 Dart strategies should be used when the opponent's score
is above 120. Using S-D-D strategies are risky and should only be used
when the opponent is almost sure to finish next shot.
Many players believe that B-S-DB is a better strategy for
91-95 scores, but this is false. Percentages for that strategy is only
27.6% - not even comparable to the T-D percentage.
